Zuph
Holman Bible Dictionary
(zuhf) Personal and place name meaning, “honeycomb.” 1. Levitic ancestor of Elkanah and Samuel (1 Samuel 1:1; 1Chronicles 6:16,1Chronicles 6:26,1 Chronicles 6:35 ) from Ephraim. He is called a Levite in another passage (see 1Chronicles 6:16,1Chronicles 6:26,1 Chronicles 6:35 ). Ephraim may be geographical rather than tribal. Others argue that late sources incorporated Samuel into the tribe of Levi because he performed priestly duties. 2. “Land of Zuph” where Saul was looking for some donkeys (1 Samuel 9:5 ). Its exact location is not known.
