NADAB. 1 . The eldest son of Aaron ( Exodus 6:23 , Numbers 3:2; Numbers 26:60 , 1 Chronicles 6:3; 1 Chronicles 24:1 ); accompanied Moses to Sinai ( Exodus 24:1; Exodus 24:9 f.); was admitted to the priestly office ( Exodus 28:1 ); and on the very day of his consecration ( Leviticus 10:12 ff. compared with ch. 9) he and Abihu perished ( Leviticus 10:1-2 , Numbers 3:4; Numbers 26:61 , 1 Chronicles 24:2 ) for offering ‘ strange fire .’ Wherein the transgression of Nadab and Abihu is supposed to have consisted is not clear. It is often suggested that ‘strange’ fire means fire taken from a common source instead of from the altar (cf. Leviticus 16:12 , Numbers 16:46 ). 2 .
