Noah
Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible
or NOAH. 1 . Nôach , ‘rest.’ The name is explained in Genesis 5:29 by a play on nicham , ‘to comfort’; but perhaps the reading supported by the LXX [Note: Septuagint.] should be adopted, ‘This same shall give us rest .’ In one tradition Noah is the hero of the Flood, and answers to Ut-napishtim in the Bab. [Note: Babylonian.] legend. See Deluge. Ut-napishtim was translated to immortality; and this is perhaps referred to in Genesis 6:9 b (cf. Genesis 5:24 and see Enoch). In another tradition he is the discoverer of the art of making wine ( Genesis 9:20-27 ). Elsewhere in the Bible, besides the references to the Flood, Noah is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 1:4 , Ezekiel 14:14; Ezekiel 14:20 , Luke 3:36 . Luke 3:2 . Nô‘âh ( Numbers 26:38; Numbers 27:1; Numbers 36:11 , Joshua 17:8 ). One of the daughters of Zelophehad, of the tribe of Manasseh. They claimed their father’s inheritance because he had died leaving no sons. It was given to them, on condition that they were not married into another tribe.
