(1780-1833) Missionary and educator, born County Wicklow, Ireland; died Bardstown, Kentucky. He emigrated to the United States, where he studied in Sulpician institutions, and after ordination became a missionary priest. In 1821 he opened Saint Mary's College, Bardstown, which exerted a wide influence in spreading education throughout Kentucky. After 12 years he turned thc college over to the Society of Jesus.
