Officials of the Holy See employed in abbreviating papal documents. They were organized into a college under Pope Pius II, reduced by Pope Pius VII to seventeen prelates, six lay or clerical substitutes and one sub-substitute, and let disappear entirely under Pope Saint Pius X.
