Reigned from elected April 9, to May 6, 1555. Born on May 6, 1501 in Montepulciano, Italy; died in Rome, Italy on May 6, 1555. Before his election he was prothonotary apostolic, papal secretary, adviser to Cardinal Earnese, who was charged with the temporal power of the Church, Bishop of Nicastro, cardinal, Bishop of Reggio, Bishop of Gubbio, legate to Emperor Charles V and to the Council of Trent, and Vatican Librarian. He was famous as a diplomat, administrator, disciplinarian, and patron of schools, but reigned less than one month.
