Founded as the Vicariate Apostolic of New Britain on May 10, 1889. Joined with the Vicariate Apostolic of New Pomerania on November 14, 1922 to form the Vicariate Apostolic of Rabaul. Entrusted to the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. Elevated to the archdiocese of Rabaul on November 15, 1966 by Pope Paul VI. Suffragen dioceses include
