(Latin: rest)

Mass celebrated for the dead, deriving its name front the first word of the Introit. It is also called Black Mass, from the color of the vestments used. It differs from other Masses by the omission of the Psalm "Judica Die" at the beginning, and of the Gloria Patri and the Gloria in Excelsis. It has a Sequence, the Dies Irae; and a special Preface. Instead of "Miserere nobis" at the Agnus Dei, the priest says "dona eis requiem." The first of the three prayers before the Communion is omitted. Instead of "Ite missa est" is said "Requiescat in Pace". No blessing is given.
