Also known as the Grey Nuns. Founded by Saint Marguerite d'Youville and Father Louis Normant du Faradon at Montreal, Canada, in 1738. Their purpose is to devote themselves to the service of suffering humanity. Foundations have been made at Saint Hyacinth, Quebec, and Ottawa which are now independent from the foundation of Montreal, forming distinct branches. That of Nicolet has, in turn, branched from Saint Hyacinth, while from Ottawa were founded the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart in Philadelphia and the Grey Nuns of the Immaculate Conception at Pembroke, Ontario in 1926. These, again, are the mother-houses of numerous establishments. The original community of Montreal has schools, orphanages, a foundling asylum, hospitals, homes for working girls, and an institution for the blind in Canada, particularly in the far North, and in the United States. The mother-house is at Montreal.
