Victor Dechamps

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Redemptorist cardinal, Archbishop of Mechlin, and Primate of Belgium, born Melle, Belgium, c.1810;died Mechlin, 1883. He helped found the Holy Family Confraternity, became consultor general of his congregation, Bishop of Namur, 1865, Archbishop of Mechlin and primate, 1875. He took part in organizing the papal zouaves and induced General Lamoriciere to offer his services to Pius IX. His prominence in history is due to his defense of papal infallibility and his battle for the Catholic schools in Belgium.
