James, the General Epistle of. The author of this epistle was in all probability James the "brother of the Lord." It was written from Jerusalem, probably before a.d. 62. Its object is to comfort the dispersed Jews, commending to them patience in suffering, joy in sorrow, and prayer in trouble. There is a close resemblance between the pastoral letter in Acts 15:23 and this epistle. Both commence with "greeting." James 1:1.
