Vine's Expository Dictionary of NT Words

1: διάλεκτος

(Strong's #1258 — Noun Feminine — dialektos — dee-al'-ek-tos )

primarily "a conversation, discourse" (akin to dialegomai, "to discourse or discuss"), came to denote "the language or dialect of a country or district;" in the AV and RV of Acts 2:6 it is translated "language;" in the following the RV retains "language," for AV, "tongue," Acts 1:19; 2:8; 21:40; 22:2; 26:14 .
