Righteous, Righteously

Vine's Expository Dictionary of NT Words

A — 1: δίκαιος

(Strong's #1342 — Adjective — dikaios — dik'-ah-yos )

signifies "just," without prejudice or partiality, e.g., of the judgment of God, 2 Thessalonians 1:5,6; of His judgments, Revelation 16:7; 19:2; of His character as Judge, 2 Timothy 4:8; Revelation 16:5; of His ways and doings, Revelation 15:3 . See further under JUST , A, No. 1, RIGHT, B, No. 1.

In the following the RV substitues "righteous" for the AV "just;" Matthew 1:19; 13:49; 27:19,24; Mark 6:20; Luke 2:25; 15:7; 20:20; 23:50; John 5:30; Acts 3:14; 7:52; 10:22; 22:14; Romans 1:17; 7:12; Galatians 3:11; Hebrews 10:38; James 5:6; 1 Peter 3:18; 2 Peter 2:7; 1 John 1:9; Revelation 15:3 .

B — 1: δικαίως

(Strong's #1346 — Adverb — dikaios — dik-ah'-yoce )

is translated "righteously" in 1 Corinthians 15:34 , RV, "(awake up) righteously," AV, "(awake to) righteousness;" 1 Thessalonians 2:10 , RV (AV, "justly"); Titus 2:12; 1 Peter 2:23 . See JUSTLY.

Notes: (1) In Revelation 22:11 the best texts have dikaiosune, "righteousness," with poieo, "to do," RV, "let him do righteousness;" the AV follows those which have the Passive Voice of dikaioo and renders it "let him be righteous," lit., "let him be made righteous." (2) Dikaiokrisia, "righteous judgement" (dikaios, and krisis), occurs in Romans 2:5 .
