(0. Eng. ort-geard, later orceard; a combination apparently of Lat. hortus, garden, and "yard" or "garth"), a piece of ground enclosed for the purposes of horticulture. The term was formerly used in a general way for a garden where herbs and fruit-trees were cultivated, but is now used exclusively for a piece of enclosed ground for fruit-trees only, and particularly for apples, pears, plums and cherries.
