Kitto's Popular Cyclopedia of Biblical Literature

Abiel, 1

Ab´iel (Father of strength, i.e. strong), the father of Kish, whose son Saul was the first king of Israel, and of Ner, whose son Abner was captain of the host to his cousin Saul (1 Samuel 9:1; 1 Samuel 14:51).

Abiel, 2

Abiel, one of the thirty most distinguished men of David's army (1 Chronicles 11:32). He is called Abi-albon in 2 Samuel 23:31; a name which has precisely the same signification (father of strength) as the other.
