Brueys, David Augustin de

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

a French theologian, was born of Protestant parents at Aix in 1640. He was brought up for the bar, but after the death of his wife took orders. He died. November 25, 1723. He at first wrote against Bossuet's Exposition de la Doctrine de Eglise, but was afterwards converted by that prelate. He wrote, Examen des Raisons qui ont donne lieu a la Separation des Protestants (1683): Defense du Culte Exterieur de 'Eglise Catholique (Paris, 1685, 12mo): Traite de l'Euchariste (ibid. 1686), where he endeavors to prove the Roman doctrine by truths admitted by both parties: Traite de lEglise, ou l'on Montre que les Principes des Calvinistes se Contredisent (1687): L'Histoire du Fanatisme de Natre Temps (1692): Traite de la Sainte Messe (1700), etc. He also wrote many dramas.
