Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

a Lutheran theologian of Germany, was born in 1678 at Lobejun, near Halle. He studied at Halle, and was the tutor of the famous count Zinzendorf. In 1706 he was appointed rector at Groningen, and in 1710 was made assistant of the pastor primarius Muller at Schwanebeck, near Halberstadt, whom he succeeded in 1723. He died September 18, 1742, leaving some fine hymns still used in the German Church: "Auf, auf, mein Geist, betrachte," "Christen erwarten in allerlei Fallen."
