Goath
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or (or, rather, GOAH', גֹּעָה, a lowing; the final ח being local in גֹּעָתָה, "to Goath," Sept. ἐξ ἐκλεκτῶμ λίθων; Vulg. Goatha), a place in the vicinity of Jerusalem, mentioned only in Jeremiah 31:39 as lying beyond "the hill Gareb," in the compass of the city from between thee corner-tower (on the north-west) and the valley of Tophet (on the south); hence, perhaps, some eminence on the western bank of the valley of Gihon. (See JERUSALEM). In accordance with the etymology is the rendering of the Targum, which has for Goah בְּרֵיבִת עֶגְלָא = the heifer's pool. The Syriac, on the other hand, has leromto, "to the emisesce," perhaps reading גֹּאָה (Fü rst Handwb. page 269b). Barclay (City of Great King, page 118) essentially agrees with the above location, although he seeks to identify the name with Golgotha (page 78), which is forbidden by the presence of the ע in Goah, and other philological considerations.
