Vanvitelli, Luigi

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

an Italian architect, was born at Naples in 1700. He first studied painting, but afterwards gave himself to architecture. He designed several churches in Urbino, and many other religious edifices in Rome and Naples. His principal buildings are the Augustinian convent at Rome, and the palace of Caserta, hear Naples. He died in Naples, March 1.1773. See Vanvitelli, Vita di Luigi Vanvitelli (Naples, 1823).
