an English divine, traveler, and historian, was born Sept. 7, 1793. He was educated at the Charter-house, London, and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1815; and he was subsequently elected fellow of Trinity College. He devoted himself for a considerable period to Oriental travel, and was for some years vicar of Masham, Yorkshire. In 1840 he was installed dean of Durham, and in 1841 became first warden of the University of Durham. He was generous in his charities, and a strong supporter of liberal opinions. He died at Durham, July 20, 1869.
