a local deacon and elder, and a noted educator in the Methodist Protestant Church, was born January 16, 1792, in Maryland. He graduated in Pennsylvania University, in 1810, and tools charge of Washington Academy in Somerset County, Maryland. In 1818 he was elected president of Washington College, in Chestertown, Kent County, and resigned this position in 1823. From this date until 1828 he resided in Somerset County; from 1828 to 1835 he taught private school in Baltimore. In 1840 he became president of the Theological and Literary School for the education of young men for the itinerant ministry of the Methodist Protestant Church; in 1846 he went to reside in Baltimore, and filled several important positions of an educational character until January 30, 1860, when, on account of feeble health, he was obliged to resign. He was president of the General Conference of the Methodist Protestant Church in 1846 and 1862. He died April 23, 1868. See Cothouer, Founders of the M.E. Church, page 182.
