1. Priest at Beth-el in the reign of Jeroboam II. When the prophet Amos came to Beth-el, and there prophesied the death of Jeroboam and the captivity of Israel, Amaziah tried to expel him from the kingdom of Israel (Amos, 7:10,12,14). 2. A Simeonite (1 Chronicles 4:34). 3. A Levite of the family of Merari and ancestor of Ethan (1 Chronicles 6:30).
According to R. Meir, the priest Amaziah is identical with the false prophet mentioned in 1 Kings, 13:11 et seq. (Yer. Sanh. 11:30b and Cant. R. 2:5).
