ἀπάντησις , -εως ,

(< ἀπαντάω ),

[in LXX chiefly for H7121;]

usually with v.l., ὑπ -; a meeting; εἰς ἀ ., c. gen. or dat., to meet: Matthew 25:6; Matthew 27:32 (WH, txt., omits), Acts 28:15, 1 Thessalonians 4:17 (v. M, Th., in l; M, Pr., 14, 242; MM, VGT, s.v.; Lft., Notes, 69).†

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

The word is used absolutely (as Matthew 25:6 and LXX 1 Regn 13.15) in P Tebt I. 43i. 7 (B.C. 118) παρεγενήθημεν εἰς ἀπάντησιν (a newly arriving magistrate)—a passage which may demolish the Semitism sometimes found lurking in the word. For εἰς ἀ. construed with the gen. (as Matthew 27:32 δ -text and 1 Thessalonians 4:17) cf. BGU II. 362vii. 17 (A.D. 215) πρὸς [ ]πάντη [σιν τοῦ ] ἡγεμόνος, and the Pelagia-Legenden (ed. Usener) p. 19 εἰς ἀπάντησιν τοῦ ὁσίου ἀνδρός. A Ptolemaic inscription edited by Strack (Archiv iii. p. 129) has ἵν᾽ εἰδῆι ἣν ἔσχηκεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ἡ πόλις εὐχάριστον ἀπάντησιν. The word seems to have been a kind of t.t. for the official welcome of a newly arrived dignitary—a usage which accords excellently with its NT usage. See Proleg..8 pp. 14, 242.

For a subst. ἀπαντητήριον, deversorium, see P Iand 17.3 (vi/vii. A.D.).
