This word, which in the NT is confined to Mark 5:13 and parallels, is found in an account of rushes used in irrigation works, P Petr III. 39ii. 8, where mention is made of those employed—εἰς τοὺς κρημνούς, for the steep banks or edges of the trench. See also the epitaph on one who had hurled himself from the cliffs, Kaibel, 225.1 f.—
Ὀστέα μὲν καὶ σάρκας ἐμὰς σπιλάδες διέχευαν
ὀξεῖαι, κρημνῶν ἅλμα ὑποδεξάμεναι.
