Plutarch, as below)), a place where meat and other articles of food are sold, meat-market, provision-market, (A. V. shambles): 1 Corinthians 10:2, 5. (Dio Cassius, 6 1, 18 τήν ἀγοράν τῶν ὀψων, τό μάκελλον; (Plutarch, ii., p. 277 d. (quaest. Rom. 54)).)

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For this NT ἅπ. εἰρ.(1 Corinthians 10:25) see Magn 179.21 (ii/A.D.) παραπράσεις τε ποιήσαντα ἐν τῷ μακέλλῳ παντὸς εἴδους : cf. CP Herm I. 127 3 verso.5 ἐντὸς μακέλλου, and C. and B. ii. 549 (= p. 646) ἡ γερουσία τὰ ζυγοστάσια πρὸς τῷ μακέλλῳ ἐκ τῶν ἰδίων ποιήσαντα, where the editor notes that ";Makellon here evidently denotes the provision market, Latin macellum."; [The ζυγοστάσια was the place where weights were officially tested.] The word is Semitic in origin (cf. Heb. מִכְלָה, ";enclosure";), and appears in Ionic and Laconian; cf. Μάκελλα in Sicily. But the Lat. macellum is the most familiar form.
