Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

בְּעֶשְׁתְּרָה (i.q. בֵּית עֶשְׁתְּרָה “house” or “temple of Astarte,” see page 90, B ), [Beeshterah], pr.n. of a city of the Levites, situated in the tribe of Manasseh, beyond Jordan, Joshua 21:27; 1 Chronicles 6:56 called עַשְׁתָּרוֹת.

As to בְּעֶשְׁתְּרָה, Fäsius (in Annal. Philol. i. 147) has of late compared Gr. ἐν κροίσου, ἐν Διός, (sc. οἴκῳ). But in Josh. loc. cit. בְּעֶשְׁתְּרָה cannot be rendered “in Astarte’s” (sc. house, or temple), but it is pr.n. of a place, put in the nominative.
