Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

בָּרַח fut. יִבְרַה.

(1)  to pass through, to reach across (prop. I believe, burchfchneiden, durchbrechen, to cut through, to break through; compare בָּרַךְ, and see, as to the sense of cutting, breaking in, the verbs beginning with בר, פר, under the verb בָּרָא), Exodus 36:33, “and he made the middle bar לִבְרֹחַ בְּתוֹךְ הַקְּרָשִׂים מִן־הַקָּצֶה אֶל־הַקָּצֶה to pass through the middle of the boards from one end to the other.” Comp. Hiphil No. 1 and בְּרִיחַ a bar, bolt. Hence

(2) to flee, to flee away, Germ. durchbrechen, durchgehn, to break away. (Arab. بَرِحَ to go away, to depart from its place, to go away to a desert land, entweichen, إِبْنُ بَرِيح a gazelle, from its fleeing.) Const. absol. Genesis 31:22, 27 Genesis 31:27; 1 Samuel 19:18 with an acc. of the place fled to, 1 Samuel 27:4 also followed by לְ, Nehemiah 13:10 אֶל Numbers 24:11, and מִן of the place fled from, 1 Samuel 20:1. The person fled from takes the prefix מִפְּנֵי Genesis 16:8, 35:1, Genesis 35:7מִלִּפְנֵי Jonah 1:3 מִן Isaiah 48:20 מִיַּד (from his hand, i.e. his power) Job 27:22, מֵאֵת (prop. from near) 1 Kings 11:23. It differs from הִמָּלֵט to escape, 1 Samuel 19:12, וַיֵּלֶךְ וַיִּבְרַח וַיִּמָּלֵט “he went, and fled, and escaped.” A dative is sometimes added to an imperative, בְּרַח לִךָ Germ. mache dich fort, rette dich, Genesis 27:43; Numbers 24:11; Amos 7:12, comp. the French s’enfuir.

Note. In one passage, Exodus 14:5, some following Michaëlis have incorrectly compared the Arab. بَرَحَ to turn the left side; for it might be well said of a people that they fled when Pharaoh was expecting them to return after three days [but how does it appear that he had any such expectation?], but who instead were about to enter Arabia.

Hiphil.

(1) i.q. Kal No. 1. Exodus 26:28.

(2) to put to flight, cause to flee, Job 41:20 also to expel, to chase away, Nehemiah 13:28.
