Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition
הָמָן [Haman], pr.n. of a noble of Persia, celebrated on account of his plots against the Jews, Esther 3:1, seq. (With regard to the etymology of this word, I formerly followed Jo. Simonis, who compares it with Pers. همان, which he translates alone, solitary. But همان is nothing but an adv. so, only, but. Perhaps a better comparison will be Pers. همام homâm, magnificent, illustrious; or Sanscr. hêman, the planet Mercury.)
