Stud. 1351, BN 219; on Egyptian derivatives compare Cook Speaker's Comm. i. 484; Arabic according to Frä151, if Shemitic, is Aramaic loan-word; see also Ethiopic Di1068) — pitch:וַתַּחְמְרָה בַחֵמָר וּבַזָּ֑פֶת Exodus 2:3 of ark of bulrushes; Isaiah 34:9 a וְנֶחֶפְכוּ נְחָלֶיהָ לְזֶפֶת וַעֲפָרָהּ לְגָפְרִ֑ית, Isaiah 34:9 b והיתה אַרְצָהּ לְזֶפֶת בֹּעֵרָֽה׃.

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

זֶפֶת f. pitch, Exodus 2:3 Isa. 34:9. Arab. زِفْتُ, Aram. ܙܶܦܬܐܳ, זִפְתָּא; but also זֵפָא, from the root זָפָה, which see. [In the Thesaurus this word is referred to זוּף (like קֶשֶׁת from קוּשׁ), as having the idea of liquefaction or dropping.] In Arabic ת servile passes into a radical letter; see הָתַל.

I. זֵק or זַק, only in the plur. זִקִּים (for זִנְקִים, from זָנַק to shoot an arrow), arrows, especially as ignited, Proverbs 26:18. Also found in the form זִיקוֹת, which see.

II. זֵק or זַק, only in the pl. זִקִּים, fetters, chains, from the root זָקַק No. 1. Psal. 149:8 Isaiah 45:14; Nahum 3:10; Job 36:8. (Ch. זִקִּין id., also in the Talmud זִיקִים). See אֲזִקִּים. [In Thes. this word is derived from the root זָנַק in the sense of binding.]
