Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

חָתַם fut. יַחְתֹּם

(1)  to seal, to seal up, to set a seal upon. A kindred root to other verbs of shutting, as חָטַם, אָטַם, עָצַם. Arab. ختم id. Conj. IV. to lock up. The general sense of shutting is also found in some forms of the Ethiopic root ኀተመ፡ see Ludolph, p. 282. Construed absol. Jeremiah 32:10, 44 Jeremiah 32:44 followed by בְּ of the signet ring, 1 Kings 21:8; Esther 8:8 with an accus. Isaiah 8:16, חֲתֹם תּוֹרָה “seal up the oracle” [rather, the law]; also בְּעַד Job 9:7 (compare בְּעַד No. 3), and בְּ Job 37:7, בְּיַד כָּל־אָדָם יַחְתֹּם “he seals up the hand of every man,” i.e. restrains them from labour, hinders them from using their hands. Job 33:16, בְּמֹסָרָם יַחְתֹּם properly “he seals up their instruction,” i.e. instructs them privately. (In this sense it answers to the Arab. حتم followed by ب to reveal to some one; see Schult. ad h. l.) Part. pass. חָתוּם sealed up, Song of Solomon 4:12; Job 14:17. The ancients were accustomed to put a seal on many things for which we use a lock (Lips. ad Tac. Annal. ii. 2; Salmas. Exercitatt. cap. 45), Cant. loc. cit.; compare Daniel 6:18; Matthew 27:66. From a roll or letter when completed receiving a seal, the signification arises

(2) to complete (like Arab. ختم to mark with a sign of conclusion, finis, to finish). Daniel 9:24, לַחְתֹּם חָזוֹן וְנָבִיא “until the predictions of the prophets be fulfilled,” [too loose a rendering of the Hebrew].

Niphal pass. of No. 1, to be sealed, Esther 3:12, 8:8.

Piel, to shut (see under Kal No. 1), followed by לְ as though it were, to put a barrier, to set a lock on something. Job 24:16, יוֹמָם חִתְּמוּ לָמוֹ “in the day they hide themselves,” properly “they shut up an enclosure around themselves.”

Hiphil, i.q. Piel, once occurs, Leviticus 15:3, אוֹ הֶחְתִּים בְּשָׂרוֹ מִזּוֹבוֹ “whether he stop his flesh from flowing,” i.e. the passage be so stopped that the issue cannot run freely.
