Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

פַּרְדֵּס m. a garden, a plantation, Song of Solomon 4:13; Nehemiah 2:8 pl. Ecclesiastes 2:5. To this answers the Gr. παράδεισος, a word properly used of the plantations and places for animals which used to surround the palaces of Persian kings (Xenoph. Œcon. iv. 13; Cyropæd. i. 3, 12; Polluc. Ohomast. ix. 3, § 3). The origin of the word is, however, not to be sought for in Greek or in Hebrew, but in the languages of eastern Asia; compare Sansc. paradêça and paradîça, high ground, well tilled, Armen. պաըտէգ a garden close to a house, laid out and planted for use and ornament (see Schroederi Dissert. Thes. præmissa, p. 56); whence have sprung the Syr. ܦܰܪܕܰܝܣܐܳ and Arab. فِرْدَوْسُ (see Kamûs, i. p. 784).
