פָּשַׁע

(1)  to fall away, break away from any one, followed by בְּ 2 Kings 1:1, 3:5, 2 Kings 3:7 (properly to break a covenant entered into with him; just like the Germ. mit jem. brechen, to break with any one. Compare Arab. فسق to fail from; compare Aram. ܦܣܰܩ, פְּסַק to break); מִתַּחַת 2 Kings 8:20, 22 2 Kings 8:22. Specially to turn away from God. Followed by בַּיְהֹוָה Isaiah 1:2; Jeremiah 2:29, 3:13 Hosea 7:13. Hence

(2) to sin, to transgress, Proverbs 28:21 followed by עַל (against) Hosea 8:1. Part. פֹּשְׁעִים sinners (those who turn aside from God), Isaiah 1:28, 46:8 and frequently.

Niphal, recipr. of No. 1. Proverbs 18:19, אָח נִפְשָׁע “brethren discordant,” among themselves (die mit einander brechen). Hence
