 [צָרַע] verb denominative, only in passive, be struck with leprosy, leprous; —

Qal Participle passive אִישׁצָרוּעַ Leviticus 13:44; elsewhere as substantive, = leper, Leviticus 13:45; Leviticus 14:3; Numbers 5:2 (all P), Leviticus 22:4 (H).

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

צָרַע Arabic صَرَعَ to strike down, whence صَرِيعُ a scourge; hence applied to diseases, as صَرْعُ epilepsy, prop. prostration. Hence is formed part. pass. צָרוּעַ Levit. 13:44 22:4 and part. Pual מְצֹרָע 2 Kings 5:1, 27 2 Kings 5:27, 15:5 a leper, pr. one stricken (by God), one smitten; inasmuch as the plague of leprosy was regarded as being sent by God [as of course it really was], comp. the verbs נָגַע, נֶגַע, נָכָה, Arabic ضرب. But since there is such an affinity between the letters צ and ג (see last remark under letter, p. 698 ) I prefer regarding the leprosy, to be so called from the idea of scabbiness; so that צָרַע would be the same as גָּרַע which see.
