רָפָה fut. apoc. יִדֶף

(1) pr. to cast, to throw, i.q. רָמָה, ῥίπτω, whence pr.n. רָפָה (casting forth, throwing down), specially

(2) to cast down, to let fall, especially the hand, die Hand fallen laffen, see Piel, Hiphil. In Kal intrans. to decline as the day, i.e. to draw to a close, Judges 19:9 used of hay in the fire, i.e. to sink down, Isai. 5:24 followed by מִן to relax, to desist from any person or thing, Exodus 4:26; Judges 8:3; Nehemiah 6:9.

(3) to be let down, especially of the hand, 2 Chronicles 15:7, אַל־יִרְפּוּ יְדֵיכֶם “let not your hands hang down,” i.e. be not lazy in the work. Relaxed hands are very often ascribed to those who have lost their courage. 2 Samuel 4:1, וַיִּרְפּוּ יָדָיו “and his hands were let down,” his courage was gone, Isaiah 13:7; Jeremiah 6:24, 50:43 Ezekiel 7:17, 21:12 Zephaniah 3:16. Used also of a person himself, Jeremiah 49:24, רָֽפְתָה דַמֶּשֶׂק “Damascus (i.e. its inhabitants) has become fainthearted.”

Niphal, to be slack, remiss, idle, Exodus 5:8, 17.

Piel, to let down, e.g. wings, Ezekiel 1:24, 25 Ezekiel 1:25 a girdle (i.e. to loosen), Job 12:21. Specially to let down any one’s hands, i.q. to destroy his courage (compare Kal No. 2), Jeremiah 38:4; Ezra 4:4.

Hiphil, הִרְפָּה, imp. and fut. apoc. הֶרֶף and יֶרֶף

(1) to let down the hand. 2 Samuel 24:16, הֶרֶף יָדֶ֑ךָ “let down thy hand,” i.e. stop from inflicting plagues. Followed by מִן for, to desert, to forsake any one, Joshua 10:6. Without יָד, to let down (the hand), i.e. to desist, followed by מִן from any person or thing, Judges 11:37; Deuteronomy 9:14.

(2) to leave off any thing, e.g. a work begun, Nehemiah 6:3 instruction, Proverbs 4:13 any person, i.e. to desert him, i.q. עָזַב Nehemiah 6:3 Deuteron. 4:31 31:6, Deuteronomy 31:8; Joshua 1:5; Psalms 138:8. Absol. Psalms 46:11, “leave off (your own attempts) and know.” 1 Samuel 15:16.

(3) to let any one go (opp. to, to lay hold of, to detain); followed by an acc. Song of Solomon 3:4; Job 7:19, 27:6.

Hithpael, to shew oneself remiss

(a) to be lazy, Job 18:3; Proverbs 18:9.

(b) to lose one’s courage, Proverbs 24:10.

Derivatives, רָפֶה, רִפְוֹן.

II.

רָפָה stands not unfrequently for רָפָא to heal, (compare קָרָא No. II.=קָרָה). In this sense there occurs imp. רְפָה (for רְפָא) Psalms 60:4 fut. תִּרְפֶּינָה Job 5:18.

Niphal, נִרְפָּתָה Jeremiah 51:9 inf. הֵרָפֵה Jeremiah 19:11 fut. יֵרָפוּ. 2 Kings 2:22.

Piel, יְרַפּוּ Jeremiah 6:14.

רָפָה (“casting down,” “throwing down,” i.e. a hero, a champion, a giant) [Raphah], pr.n.

(1) of an ancient giant, whose descendants, who were also giants, were called יְלִידֵי הָרָפָה and רְפָאִים; see that word.

(2)  1 Chronicles 8:37 for which there is 1 Chronicles 9:43, רְפָיָה [Rephaiah], (“whom Jehovah healed”).
