The black goat hair fabric used for the roof of the tent allows some light through giving the appearance of stars overhead. When it rains the hair fibers swell sealing all of these holes.

כּוֹכָב [const. כּוֹכַב], m. a star, Genesis 37:9 Psal. 8:4. (Arabic كَوْكَبُ, Syr. ܟܘܰܟܒܐܳ, Ethiop. ከዉከብ፡ and ኮከብ፡ id.; whence denom. verb كَوْكَبَ to sparkle like a star. The root is כָּבַב, Arab. كَبَّ, Eth. ከበበ፡ to roll up in a ball; whence כַּבְכַּב, and ב being softened כַּוְכַּב, כּוֹכָב prop. a globe, a ball; compare טוֹטָפוֹת.) Metaph. used of an illustrious prince, Numbers 24:17 like the Arab. كوكب, often in Hariri.
