Abbott-Smith Manual Greek Lexicon of the New Testament

** ἀΐδιος , -ον

(<ἀεί ),

[in LXX: Wisdom of Solomon 7:26, 4 Maccabees 10:15*;]

everlasting (freq. in Inscr.; MM, VGT, s.v.): Romans 1:20, Judges 1:6.†

SYN.: αἰώνιος G166, also freq. in Inscr. (Deiss., BS, 3634). The etymological distinction between the meanings of the two words seems not to be retained in late Greek (v. Thayer, s.v., αἰώνιος ; cf. Cremer, 79, 611).

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

Syll 306.15 (ii/B.C.—Delphi) ὅπως ὑπάρχῃ ἁ δωρεὰ εἰς πάντα τὸν χρόνον ἀΐδιος. In OGIS 56.54 (iii/B.C., the Canopus inscription of Ptolemy III.) it is ordained to pay τιμὰς ἀϊδίους in all the temples to Queen Berenice, who εἰς θεοὺς μετῆλθεν shortly before. So ib. 248.26 (ii/B.C., Antiochus Epiphanes) τὰ καλὰ τῶ [ν ] ἔργων εἰς ἀΐδιομ μνήμην ἀνάγων. In ib. 383.76 Antiochus I. of Commagene (i/B.C.) claims περὶ δὲ ἱερουργιῶν ἀϊδίων διάταξιν πρέπουσαν ἐποιησάμην. The phrase τ. ἀΐδιον χρόνον is common in the inscriptions, e.g. Syll 96.6 (iv/B.C.). The adjective has been restored in the late P Lond 113.63 (vi/A.D.) ( = I. p. 202) τὴν ἀϊ ]δί [α ]ν ἰσχύν : otherwise we cannot quote papyri—possibly the word was only appropriate to the stiffer language of inscriptions.
