αἴσθησις, (εως, (αἰσθάνομαι) (from Euripides down), perception, not only by the senses but also by the intellect; cognition, discernment; (in the Sept., Proverbs 1:22; Proverbs 2:10, etc., equivalent to דַּעַת): Philippians 1:9, of moral discernment, the understanding of ethica1 matters, as is plain from what is added in Philippians 1:10.

(i/ii A.D.) τούτους ἀναθεμα [τί ]ζομεν · σῶμα, πνεῦμα, ψ [υ ]χήν, [δι ]άνοιαν, φρόνησιν, αἴσθησιν, ζοήν, καρδίαν, and ib. 4.55 (iii/A.D.) βασάνισον αὐτῶν τὴν διάνοιαν, τὰς φρένας, τὴν αἴσθησιν. Prof. H. A. A. Kennedy, following Klöpper, quotes a good passage from Hippocrates to illustrate Philippians 1:9 : —de Off. Med. 3 ἃ καὶ τῇ ὄψι καὶ τῇ ἁφῇ καὶ τῇ ἀκοῇ καὶ τῇ ῥινὶ καὶ τῇ γλώσσῃ καὶ τῇ γνώμῃ ἔστιν αἰσθέσθαι.
