2. festering wound, sore, ulcer, ἕ. ὕδρου the festering bite of a serpent, Il. 2.723; plague-ulcer, Th. 2.49, X. Eq. 5.1, etc. (Gal. 10.232 defines . as ἡ τῆς συνεχείας λύσις ἐν σαρκώδει μορίῳ, and both 1.1 and 1.2 are treated in Hp. Ulc.; . is applied to amputations in Art. 68.)

II metaph., wound, loss, Sol. 4.17, S. Ant. 652,al.; ἕ. δήμιον A. Ag. 640; ὑποκάρδιον ἕ. Theoc. 11.15; γίγνεται ἕ. ἐφ' ἕλκει Lib. 1063.6. (Orig. Ελκος, cf. Lat. ulcus, Skt. árśas (n.) 'haemorrhoid': - by influence of ἕλκω.)

Thayer's Expanded Definition

ἕλκος, ἑλκεος (ἕλκους) (cf. Latinulcus,ulcerare; perhaps akin to ἕλκω (Etym. Magn. 331, 3; 641, 3), yet cf. Curtius, § 23), τό;

1. a wound, especially a suppurated wound; so in Homer and earlier writings.

2. from (Thucydides), Theophrastus, Polybius on, a sore, an ulcer: Revelation 16:2; plural, Luke 16:21; Revelation 16:11. (for שְׁחִין, Exodus 9:9; Job 2:7, etc.)
