Vocabulary of the Greek NT

ἐμπλοκή in the sense of ";struggle,"; ";scuffle,"; occurs P Ryl II. 124.28 (i/A.D.) καὶ ἐν τῇ ἐνπλοκῇ ἀπολέσσθαι (l. -έσθαι) αὐτῆς ̣ ἐν ̣ω ̣διον χρυσοῦν, ";in the struggle she lost a golden ear-ring"; (Edd.) : cf. ib. 150.12 (A.D. 40) καὶ ἐν τῇ ἐμπλοκῇ ἀπώλοντό μο (υ) ἀργ (υρίου) μ ̄. With the use in 1 Peter 3:3 cf. Syll 653.22 (B.C. 91) μὴ ἐχέτω δὲ μηδεμία χρυσία. . . μηδὲ τὰς τρίχας ἀνπεπλεγμένας, regulations regarding the ἱεραί in the celebration of the mysteries of Demeter and Kore : cf. ib. 939.10. For the simplex πλοκή cf. P Giss I. 47.7 (time of Hadrian) where a θῶραξ is described as τ ]ὴν πλοκὴν λεπτότατος. In P Ryl II. 154.31 (A.D. 66) ἀποπλοκή is used of the ";separation"; of divorce, as the verb occurs elsewhere, and the editors note γενόμενος καὶ ἀποπεπλεγμένος as a euphemism for death in BGU I. 118ii. 11 (ii/A.D.).
