Op. 508; ἐμπνείοντε μεταφρένῳ, of horses so close behind as to breathe upon one's back, Il. 17.502; of a lover, Hsch.; κατ' οὖρον, ὥσπερ ἱστίοις, ἐμπνεύσομαι τῇδε E.l.c.; ἄνεμος ἐμπνεύσας δορί Id. Cyc. 19; [ αὐλοῖς ] ἐμπνεῖν breathe into, play the flute, AP 9.266 (Antip.): c. acc. cogn., Χείλεσι μοῦσαν ἐ., of Pan, APl. 4.226 (Alc.): Pass., ἐμπνεόμενα ὄργανα Poll. 4.67; πνεῦμα -πνεόμενον τῷ αὐλῷ S.E. ἐμπνέω (T WH ἐνπνέω, see ἐν, III. 3);

1. to breathe in or on (from Homer down).

2. to inhale (Aeschylus, Plato, others); with partitive genitive, ἀπειλῆς καί φόνου, threatening and slaughter were so to speak the element from which he drew his breath, Acts 9:1; see Meyer at the passage, cf. Winers Grammar, § 30, 9c.; (Buttmann, 167 (146)); ἐμπνέον ζωῆς, the Sept. Joshua 10:40.
