Vocabulary of the Greek NT

The adjective ἄκυρος is common in legal phraseology (e.g. it comes quarter in the Ptolemaic Hibeh papyri). It occurs in the new Median parchment, P Saїd Khan 1a. .23 (B.C. 88) ὃς ἂν δὲ ἐγβάλῃ κτλ . [ἔ ]στω ἄκυρος applied to a person, whose action is voided by illegality, a classical use. In the second parchment (B.C. 22) τήν τε ἀθέτησιν εἶναι αὐτὴν ἄκυρον , it has its normal Hellenistic force. Ἀκύρωσις goes with ἀθέτησις (see s.v.), or is used by itself, especially in the phrase εἰς ἀκύρωσιν of a will or an I.O.U. received back to be cancelled : so P Oxy I. 107 .4 f. (A.D. 123) ἀνέλαβον παρὰ σοῦ εἰς ἀκύρωσιν , ib. III. 490 .3 f. (A.D. 124) πρὸς ἀκύρωσιν ἄγειν τήνδε τὴν διαθήκην , ";to revoke this will."; The verb occurs in the same sense P Oxy III. 491.3 (A.D. 126), 494.4 (A.D. 156), 495.3 (A.D. 181–9), etc. : cf. Syll 329.30 (i/B.C.) ἠκυρῶσθαι τὰς κ [α ]τ᾽ αὐτῶν ἐκγραφὰς καὶ ὀφειλήμ [ατα ].
