ἰσότιμ-ος, ον,
1. equal in honour or privilege, Απόλλων (i.e. sharing the honours paid to Zeus) OGI 234.25 (Delph., iii B.C.), CR Acad.Inscr. 1906.419 (Alabanda); ὁ θεὸς.. -ον παρέχι τράπεζαν τοῖς ὁποθενοῦν ἀφικνουμένοις BCH 51.73 (Panamara); πίστις 2 Peter 1:1; οἱ πρῶτοι καὶ ἰ. Plu. Lys. 19, cf. Wilcken Chr. 13.10 (i A.D.), Luc. ἰσότιμος, ἰσότιμον (ἴσος and τιμή), equally precious; equally honored: τίνι, to be esteemed equal to, ἰσότιμον ἡμῖν πίστιν (a like-precious faith with us), concisely for πίστιν τῇ ἡμῶν πίστει ἰσότιμον (Winers Grammar, § 66, 2f.; Buttmann, § 133, 10): 2 Peter 1:1. Field (Notes, p. 240) has shown that the emphatic idea in this word is equality, and hence that in 2 Peter 1:1, the only place where it occurs in the NT, it means ";equal,"; ";equally privileged,"; a faith which puts the readers of the letter on. an equality with the Apostles. In support of this rendering we may refer to OGIS 234.25 (B.C. 223–187) Ἀπόλλωνος Ἰσοτίμου, where the unusual epithet brings out, as the editor remarks, that this god was not of less honour than Zeus Chrysaoreus, mentioned just before, and to ib. 544.33 (ii/A.D.), where a man is described as ζῶντά τε δικα [ί ]ως καὶ ἰσοτείμως, the adverb showing ";merita hominis virtutesque non minores esse honoribus quibus afficiatur"; : cf. also P Ryl II. 253 (B.C. 143–2) Ἀπ ̣ο ̣[λλοδώρω ]ι τῶν ἰσ ̣[οτίμ ]ων τοῖς π [ρ ]ώτοις φίλοις, Chrest. I. 13.10 (A.D. 34–5), and for the force of compounds with ἰσο - such expressions as P Lond 1200.10 (B.C. 192 or 168 (= I. p. 3) χαλκοῦ ἰσονόμου, ";copper at par,"; and P Hawara 65.19 (= Archiv v. p. 382) ἀρρωστίαν ἰσοθάνατο (ν) [ἐξ ]ήντλησα, ";I have endured a sickness like death.";
