Cos 3259 ἄμαχος ἄζηλος χρόνος πᾶς ἦν ὃν εἶπον , οὐδ᾽ ἐχω [ρ ]ίσθημέν ποτε —a sepulchral inscription by a husband in memory of his wife—illustrates the non-military use of the word found twice in the Pastorals (1 Timothy 3:3, Titus 3:2). So also an epitaph from Apameia (c. iii/A.D.) in Kaibel 387, ἄμαχος ἐβίωσα με [τὰ φί ]λων κὲ συνγενῶν .
