Thayer's Expanded Definition

ἄμμος, , , sand; see. to a Hebrew comparison ἄμμος τῆς θαλάσσης and ἄμμος παρά τό χεῖλος τῆς θαλάσσης are used for an innumerable multitude, Romans 9:27; Hebrews 11:12; Revelation 20:8, equivalent to Revelation 12:18 (Revelation 13:1). According to the context sandy ground, Matthew 7:26. (Xenophon, Plato, Theophrastus often, Plutarch, the Sept. often.)

III. 43 (2) rectoii. 12 (2nd year of Euergetes I.) ἐργάσασθαι τὴν ἄμ ̣μ ̣ο ̣ν ̣ το ̣υ ̣ͅ ὑδραγωγο ̣υ ̣ͅ ε ̣̓π ̣ι ̣, τῆς κατὰ Ἡφαιστιάδα διώρυγος, ";to clear out the sand from the water-course of the canal near Hephaistias,"; BGU II. 53019 ff. (i/A.D.) (= Selections, p. 61) ὁ ὑδραγωγὸς συνεχώσθη ὑπὸ τῆς ἄμμου, ";the water-course was choked with sand,"; P Tebt II. 34227 (late ii/A.D.) εἰς ἐκσκαφὴν χοὸς. . . καὶ ἄμμου, P Flor II. 1575 (iii/A.D.) εἰς τ [ ] ἔργον ἐκεῖνο τὸ τῆς Θεω [ξ ]ενίδος, τούτεστιν τὸ τ ̣ῆς ἄμμου. From the inscriptions it is sufficient to cite Syll 587.197 (iv/B.C.) ἄμμου ἀγωγαὶ πέντε. In BGU I. 1081 (A.D. 203–4) (= Chrest. I. 227) Wilcken reads ἀμ ̣μόχοστος (l. ἀμμόχωστος), ";covered with sand,"; with reference to a plot of land, and compares the similar use of ὔφαμμος in P Amh II. 8516 (A.D. 78).
