1. strengthen, τὰς χεῖράς τινος LXX 1 Samuel 23:16, al.: Pass., ib. 30.6, al., Luke 1:80; 1 Corinthians 16:13, etc.; κ. ὑπέρ τινα to be too strong for him, prevail against him, LXX 2 Kings 10:11, al.

2. Pass., to be determined, κ. τοῦ πορεύεσθαι ib. Ruth 1:18.

II intr. in Act., prevail, ἐπί τινας ib. Ev 2 Samuel 11:23; ὑπέρ τινας ib. 1 Kings 21:23 (20).23.

III Med., control, πάθη λόγῳ Ph. 1.420.

 κραταιόω, κραταιῷ: passive, present imperative 2person plural κραταιοῦσθε imperfect 3person singular ἐκραταιοῦτο; 1aorist infinitive κραταιωθῆναι; (κράτος); only Biblical and ecclesiastical, for the classic κρατύνω; the Sept. mostly for חָזַק; in passive several times for אָמֵץ; to strengthen, make strong ( Vulg. conforto (and in Ephesians 3:16 conroboro)); passive to be made strong, to increase in strength, to grow strong: passive with the dative of respect, πνεύματι, Luke 1:80; Luke 2:40 (here G L T Tr WH omit πνεύματι); δυνάμει, Ephesians 3:16 (cf. ἰσχύειν τοῖς σωμασι, Xenophon, mem. 2,7, 7); ἀνδρίζεσθε, κραταιοῦσθε, i. e. show yourselves brave ( A. V. be strong), 1 Corinthians 16:13 (ἀνδρίζεσθε καί κραταιούσθω καρδία ὑμῶν, Psalm 30:25 (Psalm 31:25>); κραταιοῦσθε καί γίνεσθε εἰς ἄνδρας, 1 Samuel 4:9; ἀνδρίζου καί κραταιωθῶμεν, 2 Samuel 10:12).
