Vocabulary of the Greek NT

The word is found in a sepulchral epitaph from Thessalonica CIG 1974, also in the sepulchral poem referred to under ἀμάραντοςδικνὺς σέλας αἰὲν ἄμωμον. Nägeli (p. 25) further cites the Paris magical papyrus, l. 1311. For the use of Ἄμωμος as a proper name, see Fick-Bechtel Die griechischen Personennamen, p. 213.

Hort (on 1 Peter 1:19) points out that the Biblical use of ἄμωμος, properly ";without blame,"; was affected by the Hebrew מוּם ";blemish,"; for rendering which the LXX translators caught at the curiously similar μῶμος.
