2. contract, μισθοῦσι μισθώματα farm out contracts, Arist. Ath. 47.2, cf. D. 19.125; ἀπὸ μισθωμάτων θύειν by contract, Isoc. 7.29 (but expld. as from the proceeds of rents by Did. ap. Harp.).

3. rent, IG 12(7).55.15 (Amorgos, iv/iii B.C.), Tab.Heracl. 1.128.

μίσθωμα, μισθώματος, τό (μισθόω);

1. the price for which anything is either let or hired (Herodotus, Isocrates, Demosthenes, Aelian, others; of a harlot's hire, Hosea 2:12; Deuteronomy 23:18; Micah 1:7; Proverbs 19:13; Ezekiel 16:31-34, and in classical Greek (cf. Philo in Flac. § 16 at the end)).

2. that which is either let or hired for a price, as a house, dwelling, lodging ((cf. Lightfoot's Commentary on Philip., p. 9 note 3)): Acts 28:30.

In the astrological P Ryl II. 63.7 (iii/A.D.) we find the ";kidneys"; assigned to Saturn—Κρόνου νεφροί. For the diminutive cf. P Oxy I. 108i. 9 (A.D. 183 or 215) γλῶσσα μία, νεφρία β ̄, ";1 tongue, 2 kidneys";—a cook’s monthly meat bill.
