The use of this verb in P Oxy I. 95.34 (A.D. 129) ἣν ἐὰν συμβῇ παραπερῖν ἢ ἄλλως πως διαφθαρ [ῆ ]ν ̣α ̣ι ̣. [ . . , "; if the terms of it (sc. a contract) should be broken or it in any other way be rendered invalid"; (Edd.), supports the sinister meaning in Hebrews 6:6 (cf. Sap 6:9, 12:2) : cf. also Ostr. 50.3 (as amended Ostr. ii. p. 430—time of Trajan) διὰ τὸ π (αρα)πεπτω (κέναι) τὴν προτ (έραν) ἀποχ (ήν), where, in view of the foregoing ex., Wilcken (Ostr. i. pp. 78 f., 820) falls back oil his earlier interpretation of the verb = ";danebenfallen,"; ";verlorengehen."; See also P Oxy VIII. 1133.12 (A.D. 396) διὰ τὸ παραπεπτοκένη (l. παραπεπτωκέναι) τὸ γρ [αμματ ]ῖόν σου καὶ μὴ εὑρίσκεσθαι δηλῶ τοῦτω (= ο) ἄκυ ̣ρον, ";since your bond has been lost and cannot be found I declare that it is null"; (Ed.), and BGU I. 214.15 (A.D. 152) διὰ τὸ φάσκειν παραπεπ íπ ýτωκέναι.
For the meaning ";fall into"; c. dat. (as in 2 Maccabees 10:4) cf. the Christian letter P Lond 1915.2 (c. A.D. 330–340) το ̣ι ̣̑[ς ἐν. . . .]η ̣ϕ ̣θ ̣ονει συμφορᾷ παραπεσοῦσιν βοη [θεῖ ]ν ̣ π ̣[α ]ρ ̣[α ]γγέλ <λ >εται ήμ ̣ῖν ὁ θεῖος λόγος, ";to those who have fallen into . . . misfortune the word of God exhorts us to give succour"; (Bell) : cf..6 and ib. 1916.29. The verb occurs ter in Vett. Val., e.g. p. 73.25 τῇ διανοίᾳ παραπίπτοντες.
