Att. aor. being προσεῖπον, fut. and pf. προσερῶ, προσείρηκα (but προσαγορεῦσαι occurs in X. Mem. 3.2.1, προσαγορεύσομεν Pl. Tht. 147e ), aor. Pass. προσερρήθην (but προσηγορεύθην A. Pr. 834, Anaxil. 21.4, Philem. 101.6 ); coupled with προσείποις, προσρητέον in Pl. Tht. 152d, 182d sq.: — address, greet, ἀλλήλους Hdt. 1.134, 2.80; δυστυχοῦντες οὐ προσαγορευόμεθα in misfortune we are not spoken to, Th. 6.16; π. τοὺς νέους δι' εὐχῆς Pl. Lg. 823d; πόρρωθεν π. προσαγορεύω: 1 aorist passive participle προσαγορευθείς; to speak to, to address, accost, salute (Aeschyl, Herodotus, Aristph., Xenophon, Plato, others); especially to address or accost by some name, call by name: τινα with a predicate accusative, and in the passive with a predicate nominative (1 Macc. 14:40; 2 Macc. 14:37), Hebrews 5:10. (to give a name to publicly, to style, τινα or τί with a predicate accusative, Xenophon, mem. 3, 2, 1; Γάϊος Ἰούλιος Καῖσαρ ὁ διά τάς πράξεις προσαγορευθείς Θεός, Diodorus 1, 4; add (Wis. 14:22); 2 Macc. 4:7 2Macc. 10:9 2Macc. 14:37; φρούριον ... ";firstborn."; As additional proof that this word is to be taken out of the list of purely ";Biblical"; words, Deissmann (LAE, p. 88) cites the undated pagan sepulchral inscr. Kaibel 460.4 ἱρεὺς γάρ εἰμι πρωτοτόκων ἐκ τελεθ [ῶν ?] (= τελετ [ῶν ] ?) ";for I am a priest by the rites of the firstborn,"; and notes that the editor suggests that in the family of the deceased the firstborn always exercised the office of priest. He also refers to a Christian metrical epitaph from Rome of ii/iii A.D. Kaibel 730.3 πρωτότοκον, διετές, with reference to a firstborn ";sun-child"; (ἡλιόπαις), i.e. child born on a Sunday, who died at the age of two years. Note further a sacrificial decree of c. B.C. 200, Syll 615 (=.31024).17, in which mention is made of ὗν ἐνκύμονα πρωτότοκον, and a decree of adoption of A.D. 381, P Lips 598.15 (=Archiv iii. p. 173) πρ [ὸ ]ς τὸ εἶναί σου υἱ [ὸ ]ν γνήσιον καὶ πρωτότοκον ὡς ἐξ ἰδίου αἵματος γεννηθέντα σοι, and the magical P Osl I. I.312 (iv/A.D.) λαβὼν πρωτοτόκου κριοῦ ὀμφάλιον.
