συκάμινος, συκαμινου, ἡ, Hebrew שִׁקְמָה (of which only the plural שִׁקְמִים is found in the O. T., 1 Kings 10:27; Isaiah 9:10; Amos 7:14; once שִׁקְמות), a sycamine, a tree having the form and foliage of the mulberry, but fruit resembling the fig (equivalent to συκομορέα, which see (but Tristram, Nat. Hist. of the Bible, 2nd edition, p. 396f; BB. DD., etc., regard the sycamine as the black-mulberry tree, and the sycomore as the fig-mulberry)): Luke 17:6. the sycamine: Luke 17:6. (In LXX, σ . appears to represent the συκόμορος (see συκομορέα ), but St. Luke distinguishes between the two; v. ICC, in l; DB, iv, 634.) †

σύνεσις in its wider sense ";intelligence,"; ";understanding,"; as in Luke 2:47, is seen in such a passage as OGIS 323.6 (B.C. 159–138) συνέσει καὶ παιδείαι προάγων. For its more ";critical"; aspect as distinguished from σοφία, the apprehension of general principles, see Abbott ICC ad Colossians 1:9. The noun occurs = ";decree"; in the Andanian mystery inscr. Syll.3 736.112 (B.C. 92) σύνεσιν ἀνενεγκάντω εἰς τὸ πρυτανεῖον.
